The National Handloom Day Celebrated in Action

Students of grade VI visited the ' The handloom weavers cooperative society for production and trading, Payakraopet, on 8 August 2024 as part of Yatra. Referring to their social studies lesson, ‘Early civilizations ', the students learnt about one of the oldest professions in history, that is, 'weaving'.  Acknowledging the National handloom day celebrated on 7th August, the students, with the information gathered, were more enthusiastic to know about the steps in making a saree on a Handloom, from procuring the raw material to weaving the saree. At the handloom centre they could understand intricacies in weaving a saree.
The cooperative society is maintained by Mr Robbi Subramaniam, master weaver of the Handloom weaver's cooperative society.
He gave a detailed explanation on the weaving of the saree on a handloom. There were 8 looms on which the women were working tirelessly to create beautiful patterns on the saree. He explained that the raw silk material is procured either from Hyderabad or Bangalore, adding that the cotton material comes from the nearby village of Uppada.
. On an average a saree is woven in 3 days by the women weaver. The yarn that passes horizontally across the loom is called wrap while the longitudinal yarn is called weft. The students observed how the yarn is spun on a charkha. They also admired the beauty of weaving on a handloom and asked the weavers different questions. They learnt that the beautiful handwoven sarees are loved across the country and so are exported to different parts of the country. It was a rich experience for the students as they admired the beautiful colourful sarees of the weavers' society. Mr Robbi Subramanyam was presented a memento by the students for sharing his valuable and rich experience of handloom weaving.
