With the onset of monsoon, the rice farms buzz with activities related to farming such as ploughing, tilling, sowing et cetera in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh as farmers make themselves ready for a fresh crop.
We wanted the students to have a hands-on experience of the farming activities to familiarise themselves with different aspects of growing rice.
So, we took the students of grade IX to the rice fields of Sri JV Ramana Murthy, a farmer in Kummarilova.
The students were eager to visit the field as they had already learnt about crop production in their previous classes and the lesson 'Farming in Palampur ' in their present class.
Mr Ramana Murthy made the students experience sowing saplings in the fields as the students themselves sowed under the guidance of the agricultural officer Mr Ashok and the other farmers. The scientists explained the entire process of rice cultivation - loosening the soil called tilling or puddling, sowing, adding manure, pest control and finally harvesting. It takes about 120 days for the crop to be harvested from the day of sowing.
Mr Ramana informed that common varieties of RJL and BPT are grown in the fields in this area and that they get about 1000! kg of rice per acre. The
The students had a lively time as they had interacted with the farmers and the agriculture experts.
