The students of Grade IX, Sri Prakash Vidya Niketan, Tuni were taken on a field trip to Sri Rampuram paddy fields as part of 'Education with Exploration' – ‘Yatra’. The trip was specially arranged by Sri. B Srinivas, a resident of the village and one of our parents. The chief guide of Yatra, G. Nageswar Rao garu, village agricultural assistant, enlightened the students on different aspects of growing paddy - cropping seasons, number of days required for growing paddy crop, pests and their control etc.
Giving the details about the cropping patterns in the areas near Tuni, he explained that during the months of June to November (Kharif), Paddy and maize are grown. From November to March (Rabi) Wheat and Tobacco are grown and from March to June (zaid) fruits and vegetables are grown. The black soil and the water from Thandava canals, bore wells and sufficient rains make our area suitable to grow paddy. The rice varieties of RGL-2537 and BPT-5204 are grown in our area. From the time of sowing the saplings to harvesting, it takes about 135 days to harvest paddy. From every acre, the farmer gets 25 to 30 bags of paddy, spending around rs 30,000. The farmers here use both organic and chemical fertilizers.
Farmers who enroll themselves in the sachivalayam benefit from Government initiatives like subsidies and MSP (minimum support price), Agricultural loans (Raithu Bharosa, PM Kisan Yojana) etc.
The students had a lively experiential learning of sowing the saplings in the paddy field under the super vision of employees of Raitu Sadikara Samiti, Village Horticulture Assistants, and village agricultural assistants. This experience made the students understand that farmer is the backbone of Indian economy, hence we should treat this profession with due respect.
As a mark of respect towards the farmers, the Agricultural officer was presented with a memento and other fruits.
