As part of field trip Grade - 4 students visited two places. Those are CNSL (Cashew nut shell liquid) oil manufacturing company and a plastic bag shredding unit. In the CNSL oil manufacturing factory students observed the machines where the oil is being extracted from the shell of Cashew nut. Students grew more and more curios in asking the process of extraction of oil. They also identified that after extracting oil, the leftover pulp is used to run the boilers. They learned that this oil is used as thinner in paints. 40 tonnes of raw material is processed each day to get 8 tonnes of oil. Crude oil which is obtained gets heated at 180°c and cooled down so that the sludge settles down and the purified oil is stored in a storage tank. The oil is exported to different states.
In the plastic bag shredding unit, students explored the machinery and the process of shredding. They identified that all the plastic bags are first made into small pieces, washed and dried. They are made into bundles and get transported to other factories, so that they can be made into granules and these granules further made into plastic items like boxes. Students learned how the old plastic bags are being recycled.
