As part of our school curriculum, we have Mr. M. Vijay Durga Raju, Sr. Scientist in Marine and coastal survey division (Geological Survey of India) Visakhapatnam as our guest for classes-5,6 and 7. He started the session with some interesting trigger questions. He explained the "Big Bang Theory” to make students understand how universe was formed. He brought awareness in students about Geology saying it is the science that deals with the Earth’s physical structure and substances, its history and the processes that act on it. He quoted some examples that include identifying and managing natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, hill slopes, instability, soil erosion, volcanoes etc. He explained to students that geologists investigate how rocks are formed and what has happened to them since their formation. He showed igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks to children and explained that igneous rocks are formed because of magma and lava solidification, sedimentary rocks are generated from igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks are formed from other rocks that are changed by heat and pressure underground. He explained the difference between magma and lava too. He shared many interesting things like the age of earth (450 crore years), carboniferous era (coal deposition), formation of salt in seas and oceans etc. He showed different shells, for instance xenophora, commonly called carrier shell, on which we can see the mineral deposits in the form of studs.  He mentioned names of some heavy minerals like Sillimarite, Zircon, Garnet, Hevcoxene, Monazite and Rutile. Now Geologists try to extract different minerals or lime mud by using instruments like Piston, Vibro, Gravity, Dredge, Box and Gras with the help of geophysical method. Scientists are also trying to find Graphene from graphite which can give electricity 100 times better than copper. Students clarified their doubts and had a good interaction with Mr. Vijay Durga Raju. The session ended with suggestions and professional guidance by Mr. Vijay Durga Raju.
