Mr. K. Venkatesh, a famous philatelist and numismatist working as a manager at Deccan Fine Chemicals is invited as our Athidhi on 27th August’19 for Grade- 5 students of Sri Prakash Vidya Nikethan Tuni.
Besides being an engineer, he has the hobbies of collecting coins and stamps. He started collecting coins since his childhood, which he inherited as the inspiration from his maternal grandfather, Sri Goli Satyaraju. He achieved many awards and worked as a President from south India for South Asia Numismatics Association. His hobby led him to become a writer and his articles were published in Numismatic Digest. Recently, he show cased his collection which includes 1800 rare ancient Telugu coins which are of 2300 years ago, at the WORLD TELUGU CONFERENCE. He explained that the coins introduced by Greece, Turkey and India in 2nd century B.C. On the coins we can see the symbols such as sun, moon, trees and animals. In ancient India the kings used different metals, silver copper and gold to make coins. He also discussed about the coins which we are using now are made in four different mints in India such as Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata and Noida with different mint marks. He exhibited the gold, silver, copper coins with punch mark used by at the time of Mouryas, Cholas, Kakatiyas and Mahajanapadas etc.., He also answered the queries of children and shared that they also collect the coins from now by asking their parents, grandparents, gold smith. Generally coins are found at Banks of River, from the soil in the fields and at the beaches in that way we can start coin collection, it was an inquisitive programme for the children.
