Field trips and hands on learning make concepts more memorable. Wood is an organic material, the part of nature that wood comes from is the trunks, and branches of a tree. Grade 2 children were taken to a saw mill. The children were shown how to cut the wood into different shapes and sizes and how it is used to make the furniture. They understood that the several rings tell us how old the wood is. The more rings the tree has, the older the wood. They also learnt that there are two types of wood. Hard wood comes from flowering plants and soft wood comes from non flowering plants. This field trip helped the students to engage themselves with content in a variety of ways.
