Our Prakashites from grade 3 visited a weekly market that had wide variety of vegetables, leafy greens, spices and other groceries at Bendapudi village, to observe how people buy and sell. After learning the lesson, ‘Food We Eat’ students had visit to the market for acquiring the vegetable knowledge. Students noticed the consumers buying various vegetables, grains and fruits while vendors were selling their goods. Students enquired the vendors where they purchase the vegetables, how they transport them and how they sell them in the market. The vendors patiently answered that they would bring from local town market or their own fields and sell with little profits.
The science teacher who accompanied them, explained each vegetable that is rich in specific nutrients which help us to grow and live healthily. During the visit, they also found sellers using electronic weighing machines and traditional balances or a specific vessel (kuncham) to measure the grains. Few of the things like eggs, bananas and apples are sold in dozens where as other vegetables are sold in kilograms.
This visit remains as a wonderful experience for ever in their life, discussing and sharing their observations with each other.
